History Of BIGS
The Bangladesh Institute of Glass and Ceramics was initially started its journey on 11th March 1951 named as “East Bengal Ceramics Institute”. After 9 years in 1960, this institute was renamed “East Pakistan Institute of Glass and Ceramics”. After the liberation war of Bangladesh in 1971 when Bangladesh emerged as an independent nation from Pakistan, the institute was again renamed as “Bangladesh Institute of Glass and Ceramics” in 1972.

The Bangladesh Institute of Glass and Ceramics shortly abbreviated BIGC is a state-owned education Institute in Bangladesh. It is located in Tejgaon, Dhaka, 1208, Bangladesh. This institute is the oldest and only institute of its kind in Bangladesh. This institute situated on 22.00 acres of land. And this institute has about 3200 students, more than 100+staff.
Students Residential Hostel
There is only one hostel named Kabi Nazrul Chatrabash for boys in the institute which can accommodate nearly 120 students.
Library And Medical Center
There is also a large library situated in this institute. The library filled with various books from home and abroad. Students can read this book besides academic education and enhance their knowledge. For the primary treatment of the students, there is a medical center available here.

Departments with Seat Number
This institute has two departments and these are Ceramic Technology, Glass Technology. 150 seats available in Ceramic Technology, and the Glass Technology holds only 50 seats.
After the pass the SSC exam you apply online to admit in this college. Before your online application, you have need some qualifications and these are SSC or equivalent exam result need minimum 3.50 and the individual CGPA need 3.00 in math or higher math and your age must be under 22. If you have these qualifications you can apply.
Some quotas have been reserved in this institute. The female quota is 20%, SSC (vocational) 15%, minor ethnic group quota 2%, freedom fighter 5%, special needs student quota 5%, and 2% for children of officials or employees who are working in Ministry of Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment.
In early this institute provide a 3 years long course, but the duration of the Glass and Ceramic Engineering Course has changed to 4(four) years from the year 2000. Now, this course is a part of the Diploma in Engineering curriculum under Bangladesh Technical Education Board.
Like the all government polytechnic institute, this institute has also two-shift class schedules. The first shift starts from 08:00 AM and the second shift class starts from 01:30 PM.
